Great Fundraising Night for Tempus International at Opera Bob’s Public House - Monday May 4, 2009
Toronto, Canada - Opera Bob’s Public House hosted a “Good-Will Monday” social event on Monday, May 4th in support of Tempus International. The event was attended by a great crowd of Tempus supporters and raised nearly $800 for the charity’s bi-annual writing competition in Nepal called The Mighty Pen.
The crowd was kept in great spirits all night thanks to the great tunes of the talented local band “The Unknown Culprits”, who generously donated their time and talent for the evening. Check out them out at their MySpace page. Opera Bob’s co-owner also generously allocated the establishment for the event and was a terrific host: “We feel a great association with our local community, and we are looking for ways to connect with great people and give back through charitable avenues” he noted. “Tempus International is a great cause, and we’re looking forward to hosting anyone who wants to come out and support this event.” To address the lack of children’s literature in Nepal and the country’s low literacy rate, Tempus started ‘The Mighty Pen’ youth writing contest in 2005 with 1,000 participants. It grew to 13,000 participants in 18 regions across Nepal in 2007 and this year is projected to take place 25 regions with further growth in numbers. Participating youth write short stories, and the eighteen national winning entries are published into a Nepalese children’s book. The winning authors (nine female and nine male, in three age categories) attend an award ceremony in Kathamandu where they receive a copy of the published book and a tuition scholarship to support their continued pursuit of education. A further 2,000 copies of the book will be distributed to the libraries and schools in the rural regions of Nepal to help grow the children’s literature collections nation-wide. Opera Bob’s Public House is located at 1112 Dundas St West in Toronto (Dundas and Ossington).
