Tempus International 2007 Writing Contest: National Scholarship Winners Honored
October, 2007 Kathamandu, Nepal - Eighteen young faces lit up today as the national winners of Tempus International’s writing competition were honored at a prestigious awards ceremony in Kathamandu. Tempus International, a Canadian NGO founded in 2003, facilitates the bi-annual writing competition for youth from 18 regions across Nepal. To address the low levels of literacy, and the lack of children’s literature in Nepal, the contest participants wrote short stories to be published into a Nepalese children’s book. A total of 13,000 individual student entries were submitted, far surpassing the 2005 competition, where 1,000 entries were received. From these 13,000 stories, eighteen exceptional winners were selected, and they were invited to attend the award ceremony in Kathamandu with all of their travel expenses covered by Tempus International, who also awarded the students a small tuition scholarship to support their continued pursuit of education. In a final testament to their achievement, the student’s combined works will be published into a children’s book, which will help grow the children’s literature sections in the libraries and schools across Nepal with over 2,000 copies being distributed to the rural regions. Of the 18 national winners, nine females and nine males were chosen. The participants were grouped into three categories of higher secondary, secondary and lower secondary, with three female and three male winners from each group. Lower Secondary Yogesh Chaudhary – Bageshwori HSS, Bardyiya Asmita Kafle Santosh Khanal – Daisy High School, Chitwan Higher Secondary Chuda Bdr Bishwakarma – Cha Ja HSS, Sarlahi Congratulations to all winners! Special thanks to Tempus International’s country director in Nepal, Kushum Maharjan for all of her efforts, and to the NGO READ for assisting with this important literacy initiative.
