National Scholarship Winners Selected for Inaugural Tempus International Writing Contest
October, 2005 Kathmandu, Nepal - Tempus International is proud to present the winners of its inaugural youth writing contest. Over 1,000 youth from 10 district across rural Nepal participated, by writing impassioned short stories on this year’s theme of “education”, and about the importance of education in their lives. Our contest judges were greatly impressed by both the quality and poignancy of their work! Eighteen national winners were chosen by a panel of judges from across Nepal. The participants were grouped into three categories of higher secondary, secondary and lower secondary, with three female and three male winners from each group. Each winner received an educational basket filled with school supplies and a scholarship to support their future as lifelong learners. In addition, the stories will be published into a book and distributed into the libraries in rural regions across the country to help build the children sections of the libraries and improve the low levels of literacy. The winners of this year’s competition are: Lower Secondary: Suman Kafle – Balmiki Sikshya Sadan, Chitwan Secondary: Sundar Bhattarai – Roshani High School, Shyangja Higher Secondary Purna Bahadur Bhandai – Shree Saraswoti High School, Nawalaparasi Founded in 2003, Tempus International is a Canadian-based charity that facilitates a bi-annual writing competition for youth from rural regions across Nepal to address the low levels of literacy, and the lack of children’s literature in Nepal.
